Software Setup

Download the barcode software (Wrens > registration > Barcode software > download), ignoring any warning messages about it being an uncommon file, and possibly dangerous.

When you expand the zip, don’t just click and run setup.exe- that causes the error about missing files. Solution is to extract the whole zip, maybe to a folder (which you create) on the desktop, then run setup from there.

Software defaults to linking to the test system, but as of midnight+1 on regatta day, it does a Cinderella and will link to the live system.

Using the barcode software for lane cards

You can either type into the search box, and hit enter or click on Search, or scan a crew barcode which will have the same effect.

You can either enter the crew number, an BR Crew Id (6 digits), part of a crew name, or a race number as an R followed by digits. Examples:
661
101466
Walling
iris
R1
r33

The barcode scanner just does the first of these…

For a crew id, it will simply populate the form with their details. For a crew name which matches just one crew, the same. However, for a crew name which matches many crews (more likely), or  a race, it will pop up a list of matching crews. Select the required crew, and hit OK – or Cancel to abort the operation. It will highlight in grey the most likely crew – i.e. the next unregistered one. If this is correct you can just click OK.

The details on the main window include the crew no, status (registered, scratched etc.), BR ID and crew name, Club, Event, Race No, Time, Card colour and (in very pale grey so you can’t really see it) the card number.

To issue a card, click on Issue Card – THIS WILL REGISTER THE CREW and display the card in the big grey box. To make life easier (?) you can also register by hitting the Ctrl key (not sure if Ctrl is a good choice or whether it should be a function key, e.g. F12).

If you register by mistake, rescan the barcode for the crew and click on Reset (do you want an Are You Sure? on this).

You can also Scratch or No Show using the buttons at the bottom left.

Scanning a barcode is fairly safe – it won’t register unless you click Issue Card, so it’s safe to use as an information system (e.g. to advise race numbers or time, or confirm which crew is which using the BR Crew Name)

The registration loop should therefore be:

* the scanner sits in a stand so we should position it so that it’s easy for the crew or operator to use. We might want to tape the stand to the desk and cable-tie the scanner to the stand to avoid it being knocked off. Also note that the scanner reduces the laser to a dot between scans and switches on automatically when it detects something beneath it.

Feedback/suggestions welcome.
